a cent

13th October - 13th December 2023

A Cent is an installation of new work by Caitlyn Galloway. The show, which consists of manipulated newsprint grocery ads and abstracted number forms on paper, is an attempt to find aliveness in the ubiquitous languages around us.

Grocery ads have a short lifespan; they are trash practically from the moment they are printed. They are produced cheaply, churned out weekly, and meant to be quickly discarded. They are ephemeral objects, not so much read as subliminally consumed. They are one conveyor of persuasive, uninvited information competing with thousands of others in any given moment.

But, what honest messengers! Their colors yell loudly and their typography is assertive. Their slapdash design and flimsy paper weight couldn’t be more fitting for the truths they carry.

Through an intuitive process of using paint to erase, layer, and abstract information, A Cent captures fleeting communications and attempts to hold them briefly still -- massaging symbols, teasing meaning, and feeling around for the kind of value that might be found between the lines.

Caitlyn Galloway is a multi-disciplinary artist based in San Francisco. In addition to her studio practice, for eight years she founded and operated an intensive working farm in the city, growing food and flowers. The farm was a real-time experiment in the viability of urban agriculture and an acre-sized sculpture, a platform for observation, and a living conversation. She has been a trained sign painter for more than a decade.
